The Ultimate Guide to Purified Water Window Cleaning: Science, Benefits, and Industry Use

Hey there! I’m Jeremiah Hickey, owner of On The Spot Window Cleaning, and I want to let you in on a game-changer for keeping windows spotless—purified water window washing.

I’ll be honest—switching to this method wasn’t easy for me. I mean, I’m known as one of the best squeegee slingers out there (seriously, I’ve got the trophies to prove it 😎). But once I saw how much better purified water was for my customers, I was hooked.

While we still use traditional soap-and-squeegee methods when needed, purified water cleaning is now our go-to for exterior windows and glass doors. And for good reason—it delivers crystal-clear, streak-free results every single time.

We use this method on some of the most exclusive homes in San Luis Obispo County, and after years in the industry, I can confidently say—nothing beats purified water window cleaning.

Addressing Common Questions About Purified Water Cleaning

Are You Using High Pressure on My Windows?

This is one of the biggest concerns I hear, and I totally get it. People worry we might be using high pressure that could damage their glass or window frames.

But here’s the deal—we don’t use high pressure at all. The purified water we use typically comes out at about 60 to 80 PSI—basically just regular tap pressure. For comparison, a pressure washer starts at 1,500 PSI and goes up to 4,000 PSI—huge difference, right?

Instead of blasting your windows, our specialized water-fed pole system gently rinses away dirt, salt, and grime. It’s safe, controlled, and way more effective than scrubbing with soap. We use jets that fan out the water for an even clean, or smaller jets to target tricky areas—but never high pressure that could cause damage.

That’s why luxury homeowners trust us to clean their windows without any risk to their property.

Why Did You Leave My Windows Wet?

This is another big one. Sometimes, we’ll finish an entire home, and the windows will still be wet. Naturally, customers wonder—“Uh… did they forget to squeegee?”

Nope! That’s the beauty of purified water. Once we rinse off the dirt and debris, there are zero minerals left in the water. So even if the glass is wet when we leave, once it dries—it’ll be 100% spotless with no streaks or residue.

It’s actually better than traditional methods, because soap leaves behind a microscopic film that attracts dirt. Purified water? No residue, no problem.

Why Purified Water Window Cleaning is Safer for Us

Another reason I made the switch? Safety.

I've heard so many times—“Our last window cleaner used a 40-foot ladder to get up there!” But here’s the thing: ladders are one of the riskiest tools in our industry. And unfortunately, I learned that the hard way after taking a nasty fall.

That’s when I knew we had to switch things up. Now, using water-fed pole systems, we can clean even the highest windows safely from the ground. No more dangerous climbs, no unnecessary risks—just incredible results.

Purified water window washing could help prevent ladder falls. Scar shown form a ladder fall while cleaning windows.

Nature's Cleaning Method: Rain = Purified Water (We Just Control the Process)

Most people don’t realize it, but rain is basically nature’s purified water. When it forms, it goes through a natural distillation process—evaporating from oceans, lakes, and rivers before condensing and falling back to earth. In its purest state, rainwater has no minerals or contaminants, just like the water we use for window cleaning.

Ever notice how after a heavy rain, your windows sometimes look cleaner? That’s because pure rainwater rinses away dirt without leaving behind mineral deposits. Rain makes windows look dirty is when it mixes with dust, pollen, or contaminants already on the glass; or if the water is dripping off of a dirty surface and on to your windows (when rain drips from an overhead tree, for instance.) If your windows were freshly cleaned with purified water, a good solid rain wouldn’t leave a mess—it would actually help keep them stay clean for longer.

This is exactly how our purified water window cleaning process works. After we agitate and loosen the dirt on the window, we rinse them just like a clean rain would—only in a controlled and thorough way. Since the water we use is completely free of minerals, when it dries, it leaves no streaks, no spots, just perfectly clear glass.

And here’s another thing—windows and glass doors are designed to withstand water. If they weren’t, every time it rained, they’d leak! So when we clean with purified water, we’re simply using a method that mimics nature’s own process. Your windows are built for it!

Keeping Your Windows and Doors Weatherproof

Of course, for any window cleaning method to be truly effective, your windows and doors should be properly maintained. A well-sealed window not only keeps water out but also provides important benefits for your home, such as:

🛑 Preventing Leaks – Proper weatherproofing ensures that rain, wind, and moisture stay outside where they belong.

🌡️ Better Insulation – Well-sealed windows help keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer, reducing energy costs.

🐜 Keeping Bugs Out – Gaps and worn seals around windows can be an open invitation for ants, spiders, and other unwanted guests.

💨 Blocking Drafts – A properly sealed window stops cold drafts from creeping in, keeping your home comfortable year-round.

Our purified water window cleaning system works flawlessly with well-maintained windows and doors. If your weatherproofing is in good shape, you’ll enjoy all the benefits of spotless, streak-free glass without any concerns about leaks or damage. As part of your home maintenance, it’s always a good idea to check and replace worn-out seals, caulking, and weather stripping so your windows stay in top shape for years to come.

The Science Behind Purified Water: How It’s Made

Now, you might be wondering—what exactly makes purified water so special? Well, it's all about removing impurities that can leave behind streaks and spots. Here’s a quick breakdown of how we make sure the water we use is as pure as possible:

💧 Carbon Filtration – This step removes chlorine, organic compounds, and certain heavy metals, ensuring the water is not only pure but also safe for your windows and frames.

💧 Reverse Osmosis (RO) – This process forces water through a super-fine membrane, removing up to 99% of contaminants, including minerals, salts, and chemicals. Think of it as an ultra-fine sieve that catches all the gunk you don’t want on your windows.

💧 Deionization (DI) – Using ion exchange resins, this method removes all charged mineral ions (like calcium, magnesium, and sodium) that could leave behind white spots. It’s what gives our water that truly spot-free finish.

💧 UV Purification – Our truck mounted system also uses UV light to kill bacteria and viruses, making sure the water is microbiologically clean (though this isn't always necessary for window cleaning, it’s an extra level of purification for some applications).

Each of these steps ensures that by the time our water reaches your windows, it's as pure as possible—no minerals, no streaks, just perfectly clean glass.

Industries That Rely on Purified Water

1. Semiconductor Manufacturing

Companies like Intel use ultra-pure water (UPW) to clean silicon wafers. Even microscopic impurities can ruin microchips.

2. Pharmaceutical & Medical Applications

Hospitals, labs, and pharmaceutical companies use purified water for drug formulation and sterilization.

3. Food & Beverage Industry

Bottled water companies, breweries, and food processors rely on purified water to maintain taste and quality standards.

4. Power Generation

Power plants use purified water in cooling towers and steam generation to prevent scaling and improve efficiency.

5. Professional Window Cleaning

Purified water is the gold standard for window cleaning. It removes dirt, salt, and deposits without leaving streaks or residues.

Keeping embarrassing moments to a minimum

Naked customers, customers “indisposed”, intimate items left out… we’ve seen it all. On top of what we've seen, our technicians are fully biological beings (no robots in our company yet) and they operate as designed😎, which includes the use of restrooms.

I’m writing this today to keep those embarrassing moments at a minimum and to explain our best practices and recommendations so you can have the confidence that you’re working with the most professional window cleaning service in San Luis Obispo County. You may also find yourself using this post to assist when dealing with other service providers like contractors and housecleaners; or even other window cleaning companies if you do not use us.

We have stories to tell, and I will highlight a couple of scenarios that actually happened (names have been redacted) further down in this article.

Let’s be honest–no one wants to find themselves in a compromised situation or have an awkward conversation, so we'll have that conversation here. As a window cleaning company, we usually need full access to a house. Even when we are only servicing the exterior, we often need to go inside to remove screens or to access an upper deck, etc. That means you are letting us into the most sacred of places: your home, your sanctuary, your castle. Rest assured, at On The Spot Window Cleaning, we handle every situation with professionalism and respect. So let’s get to it…

When Things Get…Awkward

While we maintain the highest level of professionalism, unexpected encounters sometimes happen. Here are a couple of our most memorable moments:

The Open-Door Surprise

One time, while cleaning the windows in a master bedroom, I stepped around a divider wall and into the master bath only to lock eyes with the homeowner—completely at ease on the toilet, reading his newspaper, with the toilet stall door wide open. He kept reading. I slowly backed away, pretending the moment never happened.

The Accidental Encounter

As a standard practice, we train all of our technicians to open all doors in a home to be sure there isn’t a hidden window somewhere. Early in our career, I can’t tell you how many times we were called back for a forgotten window only to find it buried in a closet behind a door we had never opened.

The thing is, when you open a random door, there may be a surprise on the other side. Once a customer asked if a room was done already. Our employee said yes. However, there was another door to that same room which our employee did not realize. The customer had not locked the door and she was changing. Our employee got an eyeful of a fully unclothed woman who was, shall we say, in her golden years. He immediately turned around, apologized profusely, and quickly left the room.

The Great Restroom Dilemma

Notice what is required of employers according to the Yoosefian Law Firm PC:

“Basic Right to Restroom Access - California law explicitly protects an employee’s right to use the restroom when needed. The California Labor Code and Cal/OSHA regulations mandate that employers must provide reasonable access to clean, sanitary restroom facilities during work hours. This right cannot be restricted or denied except in genuine emergency situations.”

We drink plenty of water to stay hydrated, which means we will, at some point, need to use the restroom (remember we are fully biological beings?). We do our best to plan ahead, stopping at gas stations or coffee shops before arriving at your home. However, there are times when nature calls unexpectedly. As employers, we are required to provide access to restrooms for our employees. This means they have to have access to a restroom while at your home. I know what you’re feeling and I’m sorry.

For quick restroom breaks, we prefer not to use a customer’s bathroom unless necessary. However, when we are on-site for extended periods, access to a restroom is essential. Unless you prefer to provide a port-a-potty for our visit (which has actually happened before!), we appreciate homeowners letting us know upon arrival which restroom we should use. This small courtesy helps everyone feel more comfortable.

Now, let’s discuss the real issue—number two. We take every precaution to avoid using a customer’s restroom for more complicated scenarios. That said, in the rare instance where it’s an absolute necessity, we handle the situation with discretion, speed, courtesy, and cleanliness. This will only be utilized for a dire emergency. We prefer and train our team to go off-site to a public facility even if that means leaving the work-site before we are done with the job.

Why Communication Matters

The true stories I told here, while amusing in hindsight, highlight the importance of clear communication. To ensure a smooth and professional experience, here’s what we ask:

  1. Full Access to Windows – When we’re on-site, expect that we need access to all rooms. Please let us know if certain areas are off-limits so we can plan accordingly. It’s imperative that you mark the door: post-its work well. We will knock if a door is closed, but not everyone hears us when that happens.
  2. Locked Doors & Privacy – Please be sure to lock a door if you need privacy or if that area is off-limits for any reason.
  3. Bathroom Awareness – Our best customers let us know which restroom is best for our use when we arrive. This keeps the conversation professional and gives you the customer that much more confidence in our services.
  4. Minors in the Home – For everyone’s safety, our policy is firm: we will not enter a home if a minor is present without an adult guardian. This ensures safety and professionalism at all times. Be sure the minor is aware of all of the privacy issues discussed here.

Professionalism First, Always

We take our work seriously, and that means being mindful of both professional standards and personal boundaries. Our team at On The Spot Window Cleaning is committed to providing a respectful, seamless, and high-quality service—free from unnecessary surprises.

By maintaining open communication and setting clear expectations, we can ensure a smooth and comfortable experience for everyone. So, if you ever see us knocking on your door with a cautious smile, just know—we’re probably making sure the coast is clear!

Written by Jeremiah Hickey of On The Spot Window Cleaning

At On The Spot Window Cleaning, we take pride in helping San Luis Obispo County homeowners keep their windows spotless and their views spectacular. However, when it comes to cleaning garage door windows, there’s an important topic we need to discuss: the risks associated with atmospheric salt and UV damage causing oxidation to the surface of metal garage doors.

Many homeowners don’t realize that garage doors—especially those near the coast—can develop streaking or discoloration due to long-term exposure to the elements. In the image below, a metal garage door with a clear coat and a faux wood grain print below the surface is shown. The garage windows had been cleaned and the door rinsed down with the same method (purified water clean and rinse) for ten years with a total of 18 services. On the 19th service, the clearcoat surface of the door was no longer stable and streaked while nothing but water was being used. The damage was not because of the cleaning process itself, but due to long-term exposure to the elements. In this post, we’ll break down what causes this issue, why it happens, and what you can do to protect your garage door’s appearance for as long as possible.

Oxidized garage door surface. Only water was used to rinse it down while cleaning the windows.
Oxidized garage door reacting to nothing but water.

Why Garage Doors Are Prone to Streaking and Discoloration

Garage doors are constantly exposed to the sun, wind, moisture, and, at the coast, salt. Over time, these elements cause a process called oxidation, where the surface begins to break down. This happens to various degrees and may lead to fading, streaking, clouding, or having a chalky residue or texture.

If a garage door or any other surface has developed oxidation, even the purest water—like the kind we use for window cleaning—can react to the damaged surface. Ironically, using a mild detergent and a pure water rinse is what garage door manufacturers recommend using to maintain their doors.

Common causes of oxidation and streaking include:

Manufacturer Recommendations for Garage Door Care

Did you know that most garage door manufacturers require regular cleaning and waxing to maintain the door’s warranty?

Unfortunately, many homeowners aren’t aware of these maintenance requirements, and over time, their garage doors begin to show signs of premature surface damage.

Notice how proactive the manufacturer of the Unique Garage Door Brand requires owners to be about the maintenance of their doors and how limited the warranty is due to the assumed risk of living near the ocean:

"If your AMGDF Door is located less than 1.5 miles from salt atmospheres, the limited warranty for paint finish color change and chalking is only covered for (1) year from the date of purchase by the original owner. This is because of salt atmospheres (salt air). For doors in non-salt atmospheres, door finish is warranted (limited lifetime original owner) if the door is washed and hand waxed. Washed a minimum of 4 times a year and hand waxed 2 times a year."

Why On The Spot Window Cleaning Can’t Be Held Liable

At On The Spot Window Cleaning, we use a proven, gentle process that we’ve successfully applied to hundreds of thousands of windows across San Luis Obispo County. We purposefully do not use harsh chemicals or overly aggressive mechanical processes in order to prolong the life and beauty of your home. However, when it comes to garage doors or other surfaces subject to unusual wear from the coastal elements, there are certain risks we cannot control:

Oxidation and UV damage are caused by environmental exposure, not by cleaning.
If maintenance hasn’t been followed, streaking or discoloration may become visible after cleaning.
We cannot be held liable for pre-existing damage that is revealed or even exposed due to standard and industry-accepted cleaning processes.

We believe in transparency and always want to educate our customers on potential risks before performing any service. Our goal is to help you make an informed decision about your home’s care.

Alternatives to Painting: How to Restore Your Garage Door

If you’ve noticed streaking, chalky residue, or fading on your garage door, you may not need to repaint it just yet. Although we do not currently offer these services, many local painting and pressure washing companies do. Here are a few alternatives to consider:

1. Oxidation Removal

Some homeowners choose to have oxidation removed by a professional, which can restore the surface’s appearance. However, this process comes with risks—depending on the severity of the oxidation, the surface may not return to its original condition. If you choose this route, it should be done at your own discretion.

2. Protective Waxing

After oxidation removal (or even before significant damage occurs), a high-quality UV-protectant wax should be applied to the garage door to protect it from further breakdown. Regular waxing can extend the life of your garage door and keep it looking new.

3. Repainting or Refinishing

If oxidation removal doesn’t provide the desired results, repainting or refinishing may be the best long-term solution. Be sure to use a paint or coating recommended by your garage door manufacturer.

Some have used products like Everbrite Coatings with success. We have not used these products so we cannot say exactly how well they work. Here is a photo taken from their website showing how much better a door can look when restored:

From the Everbrite Coatings website's photo gallery.

How to Prevent Future Issues

To keep your garage door looking its best and to avoid unsightly issues like streaking and fading, we recommend following the manufacturer's guidelines for your specific door. This may include:

✔️ Following a maintenance schedule (some manufacturers recommend as much as monthly services for coastal homes).
✔️ Using a UV-protectant wax; providing extra protection from the sun and salty atmosphere.
✔️ Inspecting your door regularly to identify oxidation early so it can be treated as needed.

If you have any questions about how to care for your garage door or would like recommendations on safe cleaning and maintenance practices, please refer to your garage door manufacturer or qualified agent.

Final Thoughts

At On The Spot Window Cleaning, we are committed to providing the highest quality service while being upfront about the risks that come with dealing with certain materials. While we always strive for the best possible results and to exceed customer expectations, oxidation and UV damage are factors beyond our control. Because of this, we cannot be held liable for streaking or discoloration that may appear after cleaning windows installed in garage doors or from cleaning the door with a mild detergent solution or even just pure water. However, we will be happy to discuss the best options for you in advance so that we can provide the service you deserve while protecting your home in every way we know how.

By staying informed and following manufacturer-recommended maintenance, you can keep your garage door looking great for years to come.

The Secret to Sparkling Windows in San Luis Obispo County: A DIY Approach with the "Magical" Window Cleaning Solution

Living in the beautiful coastal communities of San Luis Obispo County—whether you’re in Pismo Beach, Avila Beach, or Morro Bay—means you get to enjoy amazing ocean views every day. But when your windows are covered in salt residue and grime, those views can get a little dull. If you or your partner enjoy tackling home improvement projects, window cleaning might seem like a job you can handle. And honestly, you can achieve some pretty good results—if you know what you’re doing.

At On The Spot Window Cleaning, we know there are plenty of DIYers out there who like to handle things themselves. That’s why we’re happy to share one of our best-kept secrets to getting streak-free windows. While you can definitely make your windows look better with a DIY approach, there’s a reason many homeowners eventually call in the pros; namely: time savings, safety, and results that last longer. Here’s what you should know before getting started.

The DIY Secret to Streak-Free Windows

If you want to give window cleaning a go yourself, we’ve got a simple, effective window cleaning solution. The trick isn’t in buying some expensive window cleaning solution at the store—it’s actually a basic mixture that we’ve relied on for years. Our go-to solution is a capful of Joy dishwashing detergent mixed with a gallon of water. It’s simple, but it works wonders for cutting through the coastal grime and salt buildup that tends to coat your windows here.

We jokingly call this solution our “magic” mixture because, well, it works like a charm. Other dish soaps like Dawn can work too, but make sure they don’t have any added lotions. With this formula, a good-quality squeegee, and some microfiber cloths, you’ll be off to a good start. But keep in mind, this only gets you so far—especially when you factor in time, safety, and those hard-to-reach windows.

Tools and Technique

What DIY Can and Can’t Do

There’s no doubt that with this window cleaning solution and some basic tools, you can get your windows looking decent. However, when you live in a coastal area like San Luis Obispo County, where your windows are constantly exposed to salt air and moisture, DIY methods can only take you so far. Here’s why:

1. Safety First

If you’ve got windows on multiple stories or ones that are difficult to access, cleaning them yourself can be risky. Climbing ladders or trying to reach over bushes can lead to accidents, and safety should always be a priority. It’s better to leave those trickier windows to the pros with the right equipment and training.

2. Time Is Money

Let’s be honest—window cleaning is time-consuming, especially if you want to do a thorough job. What might take you an entire weekend could be done by a professional in just a couple of hours. For most homeowners, it’s simply not worth spending all that time and effort, only to end up with windows that still have streaks or smudges.

3. Frustration with Results

Even with the “magic” mixture and the best intentions, DIY window cleaning often leads to frustration. The windows might look okay from one angle, but then the sun hits just right, and suddenly you see streaks everywhere. Not to mention, the salt buildup from the ocean air can be tough to remove completely without professional-grade tools. Professionals, like the team at On The Spot, have the experience and equipment to leave your windows perfectly clean and streak-free every time.

Practice makes perfect

- As told by Jeremiah Hickey owner of On The Spot Window Cleaning in San Luis Obispo County, CA

Does the Champ still have “IT”?

At the 2024 International Window Cleaning Association’s (IWCA) annual convention held in Galveston, Texas, at Moody Gardens, the answer was a clear “Yes.” But there’s a lot more to the story than that…

Picture an exhibition hall ablaze with excitement as I, alongside the esteemed Jeff Likes, showcased our expertise, setting the stage for an electrifying showdown: an exhibition heat as ambassadors building excitement for the speed window cleaning competition to come. Jeff Likes of Jeff Likes Window Cleaning in Davis, California, is the only other American to win the World Cup of Window Cleaning championship.

As the crowd gathered in anticipation, Jeff and I stepped onto the stage, our squeegees ready for action. With practiced precision, we demonstrated the finesse and technique honed over years of experience, leaving behind a trail of sparkling windows.

I completed my run in 10.5 seconds - the fastest run of the event!

Jeff and my exhibition set the stage for the upcoming contest and ignited the enthusiasm of the audience. The next fastest run of the night was Jeff’s exhibition run, while the winner of the event, Kory Klimas of Koastal Kleaners Window Cleaning in Connecticut took the title of this year’s IWCA’s “Fastest Window Cleaner” during the Jim Willingham Speed Competition.

With Jeff Likes

My exhibition run was by far the fastest of the event filled with competitors from as far away as Brazil and Sweden; however, I was there as a mentor, coach, and judge of the event, not a competitor.

This was my and Amanda’s first time in Galveston. From taking in the coastal views of the Gulf of Mexico, to walking the downtown streets finding delightful culinary treats, and exploring the deep history of the famous island off the coast of Texas.

Exploring Galveston

Storm Surge Marker Overhead

We didn’t realize, but Galveston is home to the worst natural disaster in U.S. history. The storm of 1900 was a massive hurricane that put the island under water; destroying 2/3rds of the structures and taking over 6000 lives. It was humbling walking through the streets and seeing plaques on the sides of buildings denoting them as survivors of that major storm.

Since then, there has been a sea wall built and many foundations raised to help prevent similar tragedies from the many hurricanes that continue to plague the region.

Culinary Fun

What about the food?

My favorite dish of our vacation was cajun-style jumbo shrimp in a thick red sauce. The red snapper was also a delightful fish that I had never eaten before. It was very light and flaky with just enough meaty texture to make me happy as I sank my teeth into it.

If you head to Galveston, I recommend Katie’s Seafood House for their boat-to-table freshness and delicious seasonal plates, and the Cajun Greek for their "Mason's Royal Head On Shrimp" in their recommended spicy sauce.

Networking Opportunites

Of course, no convention would be complete without its fair share of networking opportunities. Amidst the bustling crowds and spirited conversations, I forged connections with fellow window cleaning professionals from Brazil to Sweden and everywhere in between. From sharing trade secrets to swapping stories of squeegee triumphs, I found common ground in our passion for perfection and commitment to excellence. It was a reminder that, beyond the thrill of competition and the allure of exotic cuisines, it's the bonds formed and cherished that truly make the journey worthwhile.

Until next time...

Window cleaning in Cayucos has its unique challenges: so we're here to help.

When you live by the breathtaking California coast, it's a dream come true. The salty ocean breeze, the soothing sound of waves crashing, and the sunsets over the Pacific make Cayucos a paradise. However, these coastal blessings come with a challenge: salty ocean deposits on your windows and frames. Fortunately, there's no need to worry. Our team at On The Spot Window Cleaning has you covered. With years of experience in the industry, we're here to give our top 5 suggestions for keeping your windows incredibly clear; provided with the highest level of professionalism.

Cayucos Window Cleaning - The Blessings and The Curses

Living by the sea is like a perpetual vacation, but the salt in the air can be a relentless adversary when it comes to maintaining clear and spotless windows. Salt deposits not only obstruct your view but can also damage your window frames over time. That's where professional window cleaning comes into play. We've seen it all at On The Spot Window Cleaning, and now we're going to share our top 5 suggestions to make sure your windows stay spotless.

Tip 1: Use the Right Tools

Professional window washers know that using the right tools is paramount. For windows by the sea, a squeegee, scrubber, and a high-quality, non-abrasive window cleaning solution are your best friends. Using the right equipment ensures a flawless finish and keeps salt buildup from causing damage over time.

Professionals also realize that a purified water rinse of the glass and frames is the most effective way to keep the salty debris from building up on the exterior of the windows.

Some of our favorite tools are on display in the video above:

Tip 2: Regular Cleaning Schedule

Consistency is key. Maintaining windows is essential, particularly in coastal communities like Cayucos. Setting a cleaning schedule, whether it's monthly, quarterly, or semi-annually, will prevent salt and grime from building up on your windows. Proactive maintenance keeps your windows and frames in perfect condition.

Read more about the benefits of a maintenance program here.

Tip 3: DIY Cleaning Solutions

Sometimes, a DIY approach can be effective. You can make your cleaning solution using a mixture of water and vinegar or a mild dish soap. These methods are effective in getting rid of dirt and salt without damaging your glass. Just remember to rinse the exterior of the windows thoroughly and squeegee for a streak-free finish.

Notice what shewearsmanyhats.com has to say about this homemade solution: "There was an immediate difference, and so much easier than what we had tried in the past."

CAUTION: Do not rinse the windows with tap water unless you will be cleaning them immediately after. The mineral deposits that occur when using the local water will only cause more work for you.

Watch the video below for a professional demonstration of how to clean especially dirty windows.

Tip 4: Professional Cleaning Services

When the going gets tough, the professionals get going. If you find your windows and frames are in need of some extra care, it's best to call in the experts. Professional window cleaning services, like On The Spot, have the experience and tools to handle the salt deposits and leave your windows gleaming.

Tip 5: Protecting Window Frames

It's not just your windows that need attention. Your window frames may corrode due to the salty air. Regularly inspect and maintain them, using appropriate sealants and paints as needed. You can prevent long-term harm to your frames by taking this additional precaution.

The Importance of Purified Water Window Cleaning

The importance of purified water window cleaning cannot be overstressed. Maintaining the appearance of your home or business is crucial, and window cleaning plays a vital role in achieving this. Clean windows not only enhance the look of your property but can also impact your reputation. Dirty windows can create a negative impression, especially for businesses. However, traditional window cleaning methods can be dangerous, particularly when accessing high windows. That's why at On The Spot Window Cleaning in San Luis Obispo County, CA, we specialize in using purified water and extension poles to provide a safer and more efficient way of cleaning windows of multi-million dollar residential properties and commercial buildings up to four stories high.

Training Tips For Purified Water Window Cleaning

The Benefits of Purified Water for Window Cleaning

Purified water is water that has been purified by removing impurities such as minerals, chemicals, and other contaminants. It is often referred to as Reverse Osmosis (RO) or Deionized (DI) water, which designates how the water was purified. It is preferred for cleaning windows because it does not leave any residue on the glass, resulting in a cleaner and clearer window. Traditional window cleaning methods require the use of soap, which can leave a film on the glass. The use of purified water eliminates the need for soap and squeegeeing, resulting in a more effective and efficient cleaning process.

The Role of Extension Poles in Modern Window Cleaning

Extension poles are an essential tool in modern window cleaning, particularly for multi-story buildings. The use of extension poles eliminates the need for ladders, which can be dangerous. Falls from ladders are a common cause of accidents in window cleaning, and the use of extension poles significantly reduces this risk. In 2019 there were 171 workplace deaths due to ladder falls and upwards of almost 6000 workplace injuries due to ladder falls.

Additionally, extension poles allow for easier cleaning of hard-to-reach areas, such as high windows and skylights. The poles are designed to be lightweight, making it easier for the cleaner to maneuver and control the pole, resulting in a more efficient and safer cleaning process.

Additional Benefits of Using Purified Water and Extension Poles

Using purified water and extension poles provides numerous benefits, including a higher-quality finish and a more cost-effective solution for window cleaning over renting lifts or rigging for rope descent access. The window may stay wet after service, but it will look perfect when it dries, providing a clear and sparkling finish. Moreover, since extension poles are safer than ladders, they can save time and money on insurance and workers' compensation.

The Importance of Regular Window Cleaning for Homes and Businesses

Regular window cleaning is essential for both homes and businesses for several reasons. First and foremost, clean windows enhance the overall appearance of the property, making it more attractive and inviting to visitors and customers. This is especially important for businesses that want to create a positive first impression on their customers. In addition, clean windows also improve the amount of natural light that enters the property, which can boost the mood and productivity of the occupants.

Another reason why regular window cleaning is important is that it can help extend the lifespan of the windows. Dirt, grime, and other debris can accumulate on the windows over time, which can cause scratches and other damage to the glass. This damage can be costly to repair and may even require the replacement of the entire window. Regular window cleaning can help prevent this type of damage, ensuring that the windows last longer and continue to perform as they should.

For businesses, regular window cleaning is even more critical as it can impact their reputation. Dirty and smudged windows can give the impression that the business is not well-maintained, which can negatively affect its reputation and drive away customers. On the other hand, clean and well-maintained windows can enhance the business's reputation and attract more customers.

Why Choose On The Spot Window Cleaning

In addition to our expertise in using purified water and extension poles, we also offer a range of other window cleaning services, including interior window cleaning with traditional tools and extension poles, screen cleaning, and track cleaning. Conclusion

Window cleaning is an essential service for both homes and businesses, and the use of purified water and extension poles is a safer and more efficient way of cleaning windows. Failed Windows? Uggh!!! If you live in a coastal community like our lovely beaches along the Central Coast of California, you may have noticed a common issue with your dual-paned windows – a hazy or foggy appearance, which indicates that there is moisture or condensation between the panes. Sometimes the windows may even  look streaky or tarnished after they have been properly cleaned.

Failed windows can be a frustrating and unsightly problem, especially when you want to enjoy the beautiful views of the ocean or the hills surrounding your home in a town like Cayucos or Avila Beach. This problem is not unique to our area and affects homeowners across the country. We will examine the causes of dual-paned windows failing in this blog post, as well as possible solutions.

What Are Dual-Paned Windows?

The most typical kinds of windows for newer homes are dual-paned windows, commonly referred to as double-paned or double-glazed windows. They consist of two panes of glass separated by a space filled with air or a gas like argon. Insulation is provided by the area between the panes, which keeps your house cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Dual-paned windows also provide additional benefits such as reducing outside noise, improving energy efficiency, and blocking UV rays.

Why Do Dual-Paned Windows Fail?

There are several reasons why the seal can fail:

  1. Age: Dual-paned windows have a lifespan of around 15-20 years. As they age, the seal between the panes can become brittle and crack, allowing air and moisture to enter.
  2. Poor installation: If the windows were not installed correctly, the seal may not have been properly applied, leading to premature failure.
  3. Extreme weather: The seal may expand and shrink as a result of exposure to high temperatures, such as scorching summers or freezing winters, which can result in failures and cracks.
  4. Physical damage: If the window is hit or impacted in some way, the seal can be damaged, allowing air and moisture to enter. Some chemicals may cause damage to seals as well.

Although dual-paned windows are intended to survive for many years, they occasionally experience problems. The most common reason for dual-paned windows to fail is due to seal failure. The seals around the edges of the window can weaken and break down. Often the first sign of failure is a purplish distortion that sometimes has machine marking or even handprint formations - indicating corrosion of the low-e coating on the internal surfaces of the window.

It may be that the added element of the salt air in our beach towns like Pismo Beach, CA, can quicken the decay of the window seals.

What Causes Haze or Moisture Between the Panes?

When dual-paned windows fail, moisture can seep into the space between the panes. The way the moisture appears can vary throughout the day depending on how warm the window gets.

At other times, oxygen is introduced into the window through a failed seal causing some corrosion and a tarnished look of the low-e coating.

In addition to the aesthetic issues, moisture between the panes can also cause other problems including a reduction in insulative properties.

Why Does Moisture Appear After the Windows Are Cleaned?

Like a cold drink developing moisture on the outside of an otherwise dry glass, the difference in temperature between a cleaning solution and the internal surface of the glass can cause the moisture that is already between the panes of the window to condense into more visible droplets. Windows can even develop moisture patterns in the same pattern as the movements of the scrubber during the cleaning process. This is not moisture being pushed through the glass during the cleaning process, but is the condensation process as described above.

What Can Be Done to Address the Issue?

Oftentimes glass companies request the windows be professionally cleaned to be sure a hazy looking window isn’t due to a buildup of dirt and grime. A great course of action is to call reputable window cleaners like On The Spot Window Cleaning out of Grover Beach, CA. A good window cleaning company can often assess the extent of the damage and recommend the appropriate course of action. In fact, a comprehensive assessment of your windows is available when you elevate your property with one of On The Spot's annual service plans.

Some companies offer a method of drilling into the windows to install vents and try to remove the moisture without replacing the windows. This type of service has varying success and can often complicate future cleanings of the windows.

A good glass installer should be able to assist with the best solution to replacing a failed dual-paned window. Many times just the glass can be replaced without replacing the entire window. Be sure to check with the manufacturer to see if your windows are under warranty.

How Can You Prevent Dual-Paned Windows from Failing?

While dual-paned windows can fail for a variety of reasons, there are steps you can take to help prevent seal failure and other issues. Your windows must be regularly maintained if you want to keep them in good shape. Here are some pointers to keep your windows in good condition:

  1. Check the condition of the seals surrounding your windows on a regular basis.
  2. Keep your windows clean, both inside and out, to prevent dirt and salt from accumulating on the seals and possibly causing damage.
  3. Be very cautious about placing items or films on the glass that can cause the window to heat up even more than what should be expected for your climate.
  4. Keep the moving parts of your window in good working order to prevent overstressing the window during opening or closing.

Conclusion

Dual-paned windows are an excellent investment for homeowners in our wonderful community. If you're experiencing issues with your dual-paned windows, don't hesitate to contact us at On The Spot Window Cleaning. We'll be happy to assess your windows and recommend the best course of action to restore them to their former glory.
